Keep long-lived enterprise systems running on modern hardware
Kesto Systems builds software for organizations whose critical workloads outlast the hardware they were built for. Our product, Gavial, runs HP-UX and other Itanium operating systems unmodified on standard x86-64 Linux servers.
Run your Itanium workloads on standard Linux servers
Gavial emulates an HP Integrity Itanium 2 server in software. Your operating systems install from their original media, or boot unmodified from disk images of your real machines, and run as ordinary managed services on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. The emulated devices are ones HP-UX already has drivers for, so the guest and its applications need no changes.

Run what you run today
- HP-UX 11i v2 (11.23) and 11i v3 (11.31), unmodified
- Linux for Itanium (Debian 7 tested)
- OpenVMS I64 V8.4 as a preview
- Install from original DVDs, or boot disk images of real Integrity servers
- Move running HP-UX servers in with Ignite-UX recovery tapes (beta)
Storage
- Emulated SCSI controller of a model widely supported by guest operating systems
- Up to eight disks per guest, each up to 2 TB
- Snapshots, rollbacks and clones in seconds
- Import disks and DVD images from files, devices or over ssh
Networking
- Up to four Gigabit Ethernet adapters per guest, bridged onto your LAN
- Untagged, single-VLAN access, or a trunk of up to 64 tagged VLANs per adapter
- Guests appear on the network like physical servers
Operations
- One management tool,
gctl, for every guest operation, without root - Each guest a systemd service in its own unprivileged container
- Upgrades without stopping running guests
- Offline migration between hosts
- Signed .rpm packages; subscription token, no license server
Built and tested on AMD EPYC servers
Emulation speed depends mostly on single-core performance. We recommend AMD EPYC Zen 3 or newer, or Intel Xeon with Golden Cove cores or newer, at 4 GHz or more, for example an HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 Plus v2 with one or two EPYC 74F3 processors, running RHEL 10. Plan about one host core per busy guest, plus the guest's memory and about 2 GB.
In the 0.1.0 beta
- Single-CPU guestsbeta
- x86-64 hosts with AVX2, RHEL 10beta
- HP-UX 11.23 and 11.31, Debian 7 (ia64)beta
- OpenVMS I64preview
Planned
- HP-UX guest agent for communication between guest and host0.1.0
- Multi-CPU guests1.0.0
- Failover between two hosts on shared storage1.0.0
- Packages for 64-bit ARM hostst.b.a.
- Live migration between identical hostst.b.a.
A Finnish software company with a long view
Kesto is Finnish for endurance. Many organizations still depend on systems that have run reliably for decades, while the hardware under them ages out of support. We build software that lets those systems keep running on current, supportable servers.
Kesto Systems sells its products as recurring subscriptions to mid-size and large organizations, directly and through partners.
